GnackTrackR6

On March 3rd the sixth release of GnackTrack was opened to the public. (I realize the post is a bit late but I was revamping this site.) One of the most prominent features of this release is the addition of a single button that themes the entire system to look like Windows XP. It overall is a very good and graphically pleasing penetration testing Linux distro. I hope that future releases encourage software designers to take a good look at the security of their products and that they benefit from systems like this; to test and re-test their software before rushing it to the market. I’m sure Microsoft Windows could take quite a few pointers before coming up with Windows 8.

Our Video Game Project

TOP SECRET

I’ve been getting together a project to develop a video game. The thought might be amusing, web designers creating a game but in reality it is similar in a lot of ways to our work. We design, layout, touchup, test, and test again. The video game is going to have a similar appearance to Quake and Halo. With multiple levels, tons of hidden weapons, and zombies– well maybe zombies, this video game is going to be the highlight of the new year. There are different editions planned too, depending on your gaming expertise and budget.

As you can see above, I’ve uploaded a pre-alpha screenshot, the very first in the development. It will be designed to run on Windows and hopefully Linux with the help of Wine (I’ll let you know if it runs properly or not). Since we are in the very early stages; if anyone has requests for the map, weapons, characters, etc, please leave a comment below. I wish I could say more but this project is so elusive, we’re not even going to tell you the name.

Trinity Rescue Kit & BitDefender

Although I mostly use Linux there comes a time when you need to use Windows for one thing or another. Almost always, disaster strikes. In this case it was a series of trojans, rootkit droppers, and various adware. My browser was no longer mine, it was the victim of a cruel and unrelenting trail of popups, malware downloads, and just plain crashes. After a while things began to look grim. I remembered several Linux rescue discs and finally decided to try out two: BitDefender and Trinity Rescue Kit (BitDefender is included in Trinity’s toolkit but I ran it separately anyways). Trinity has a strong barebone Linux feel, and BitDefender has a nice GUI with some basic programs. It would be a gross understatement to say that they helped. A very (very) long night later my computer was in good health. I’m proud to have used Linux-powered tools to remove over a dozen infected files.

Bones – Season 6 Premier

After a very teary finale of season 5, this season’s premier brought it all back together and mended open wounds, “metaphorically speaking”. You’ll understand the quote if you watch the episode. For some reason they kept saying that through the whole episode. I’m actually surprised they didn’t throw a Windows Kin in there somewhere. I counted at least 6 Windows logo shots, all in the same scene (funny, this is season six). Guess we should all sleep soundly knowing the FBI’s forensics lab runs on Windows *wink wink*. So in episode 2 I would love if Angela tries to run a third program and then realize she’s running Windows 7 Starter Edition (link related). Sorry, Windows rant finished. I couldn’t help but laugh at Booth’s belt buckle in the Korean factory.

That’s all I’m saying about it; Bones is a great TV show and you should show them appreciation by watching the episode. Hopefully you guys/gals enjoy it as much as I did. Minus the hidden advertising and obscene belt buckle. Oh, and did Booze have the new BlackBerry?

Firefox 4, Beta

I recently downloaded the 5th beta of Firefox 4 after not being able to resist trying it. Its truly going to stomp out any competition from the weed in Firefox’s garden known as Google Chrome. Don’t get me wrong, I use Chrome from time to time, but it’s too Googly for my taste. With Firefox’s next browser release smooth browsing will find its way into every Firefoxer’s computer.

Have to admit I was a bit disappointed there was no Linux release of the beta (yet). Could barely stand using Windows long enough to take the above screenshot. Yes yes, my hatred of Windows overflows onto my blog from time to time. But I have perfect reason to be angry when Halo crashed twice and my computer decided to reboot on its own. Not really much to see in the screenshot other than the improved browser controls and the nice little Chrome-like tabs.
