What the New Year Has in Store

Ink Ignite as a company has several new projects planned for this year; including an entire video game that will be sold exclusively on this site. A demo of the game will be available soon to anyone who wants it. We are planning to expand the scope of our customers and designs. Covering even more counties, along with making our standards even higher than before. So you can expect to see us updated and ready to take on a new year. Along with the video game, we’re going to be launching a small branch of our company to be named “Burning Droplet Studios” to handle game development.

Aside from our new year endeavors, the rest of the computer world has a few things planned as well. One of them being the release of WordPress 3.1 and the much-anticipated release of Ubuntu 11.04. These two software updates should lead to a whole new level of computing; helping more people publish a higher quality of content. Since our site runs on WordPress, this is going to be an opportunity to enhance the entire site for everyone who uses it. Ubuntu is what runs our design computers, so it’s update will allow us to make changes to websites faster than before. Hopefully we will also be seeing the release of Firefox 4. I’ve already tried the beta out in Windows and Linux and I must say it destroys all hope of Google Chrome taking the lead in the browser market.

Just as an added bonus, we’ll give you 30% off, if you ask about the “New Year 2011 Special”. (This is separate from any other specials.)

GnackTrack

**Update: This review is for GnackTrack Final. I’m downloading the R2 as I’m typing this so expect some updates to the review if anything is changed.

When I was recently browsing for new Linux distributions to try out, I ran across one that caught my eye: GnackTrack. A Gnome-based-Ubuntu-child, this distro gave me the chills when booting it up for the first time. Not only is the entire system designed to look amazing, it’s also designed for security testing. The list of tools is too long to go into here but let’s just say that BackTrack finally has some big competition. If you’re one of those people who likes trying out the next-best-thing, this would be it!

I have a feeling this is going to be one of those Ubuntu forks that takes on a face of its own and grows immensely. Based on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, you can expect this system to have full support for quite a while. In fact, I’m going to install it on my external harddrive as soon as I get a chance. There’s not much more to say other than; if you have virtual machine software or an extra flash/usb drive laying around, try it out! (I’ve provided a screenshot below but it doesn’t do the system justice, you have to see to believe.)

Linux Mint 10 RC

I must say I’m thoroughly impressed with this release! Just booted it up off a flash drive and it was amazing. As a matter of fact I’m writing this post from the release candidate right now, and loving every second of it. The icon theme is comparable to that of a Mac, the theme is cleaner than the pope’s mouth, and the font is so small but crisp. Even my site looked better in it. Without say the assortment of Minty wallpapers which follows each release was nice enjoyable. It came with a smooth metallic theme, which gave a new twist to the mint aspect. I’m trying to find an excuse to install this even though it’s not the final version. This definitely takes Mint beyond the boundaries of Ubuntu and firmly plants a new branch in the Linux world! I decided to change around the normal embedding of a screenshot and put it into the header, so above you’ll see a nice photo.

Ubuntu 10.10

Here we go! The latest release of the almightly Ubuntu operating system. They of coursed planned the 10.10 on 10/10/10, and now I’m publishing this post at 10pm. Not too impressed with the default theme, and the left-hand-side window controls are getting to be annoying. But other than that I love the speed (even in a virtual machine) and the HD wallpapers included. Installation was significantly faster, as now you specify settings while Ubuntu installs in the background. I’d like to see some better-looking themes in the next Ubuntu release but otherwise it was very pleasant to test out. I have high hopes for Linux Mint 10 (which should be based on Ubuntu 10.10 and should come out soon- hopefully). Below is a screenshot of the default wallpaper/theme and on the right is an alternate wallpaper and theme.

Linux Mint Debian

One of my favorite flavors of Linux was released recently but taking a new approach. Perhaps they got tired of the corporate-minded ideals that are finding their way into Ubuntu or perhaps they just wanted to start a fresh branch. Whatever the case, Linux mint has now released a crisp new branch in their family tree: Linux Mint Debian. Debian itself is the parent of Ubuntu and the grandparent of Mint, now she becomes the parent of this new system. Below I’ve uploaded screenshots of the system running by itself and with an added wallpaper from Gnome-Look. Although the new OS has just been born I can see great potential. The image file and further infomation can be found on the Linux Mint website.

**You can expect to see a post about my business cards fairly soon!

Fedora 13

Fedora 13 just popped out of nowhere. I can’t say I particularly enjoyed this release but it seemed nicer and faster than the last one. It’s not that Fedora isn’t able to handle stuff, it’s that they aren’t adding anything new to the project. The most I noticed was an icon and wallpaper change. Not even a GTK makeover? I suppose the system is trying to be too much like it’s big brother, Red Hat. Personally if Fedora stepped up the design, I would have no problem fully deploying it on my desktop. So my question is, is the Fedora Project even trying anymore? Why should I use Fedora over any other system? Are they somehow more special than others?

Drop a comment of your personal experience.

*Update*
As a comment from one of my readers pointed out, there are numerous improvements to the system. Although it may have not gotten the same makeover as Ubuntu, there were certainly some upgrades. I did forget to point out the enhancement in the installation as well as the professional feel to the system. I did not feel like I was using a second-rate operating system, but instead one with advanced capabilities. Thank you Rahul for your comment! You’ve shed some light on the project.

Ultimate Edition 2.4

UE2.42
Ultimate Edition 2.4 (Ubuntu-based distribution) was recently released and I downloaded it as fast as possible. Though it IS slower than Ubuntu, it makes up for it by sheer beauty. It should be called “Ubuntu on Steriods”. At one time Ultimate Edition (UE) was my primary operating system, and I would still use it if it was faster with it’s installation and such. I would recommend this distro for gamers or someone with a lot of cpu/ram power to run it. It can be run from the same specs as Ubuntu (512mb or more ram). If you have any questions about it or the differences between UE and Ubuntu, feel free to contact me.

Also, I released a wallpaper for Ultimate Edition, although it doesn’t exactly match any default system themes.
